Food grade hydrogen peroxide products are 35% hydrogen peroxide and 65% water — not to mention that it is safe to ingest should one accidentally consume it or consume something that has been exposed to it. Because of this, you can use food grade hydrogen peroxide around your pets while resting assured that they are safe. But how can you use hydrogen peroxide to help your furry friend?
As a dog owner, you know that sometimes there is nothing that you can do to prevent your furry friend from getting a scratch here and there. After all, they run through the woods, crashing through brush and branches without a care in the world.
If your dog is scratched up or has a minor cut, food grade hydrogen peroxide is a great solution for disinfecting the cut. If the cut festers for too long, bacteria may begin to grow — causing a variety of other health issues. To disinfect the wound, simply get a cloth wet with your diluted food grade hydrogen peroxide and dab at the cut — allowing the solution to enter the wound and sterilize it.
Note: Hydrogen peroxide is only beneficial for small scratches and cuts where bleeding can be stopped with light pressure or where the wound stops bleeding by itself. And more serious scratches and cuts should be looked at by a veterinarian that is qualified to treat your pet.
While this question might seem odd to some, most dog owners will know what we are talking about. To put it simply, most dogs have ear issues — some more than others. Ear infections and yeast buildup is extremely common in breeds with larger ears and for dogs who spend a lot of time in the water. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to sterilize the bacterial growth inside of your dog’s ears.
Food grade hydrogen peroxide is an excellent tool for sterilizing bacterial growth. Not only is this because of the strength of the chemical compound, but it is also beneficial because it is extremely quick drying.
To clean your dog’s ears, simply dab a damp cloth with hydrogen peroxide on the inside of their ear. Do not use Q-Tips or pour the solution inside of the ear. Once you have applied the hydrogen peroxide, be sure to monitor your dog's ears to ensure that the bacteria does not continue to grow and to ensure that their ears do not become inflamed.
It may seem a little outlandish to want to make your dog throw up, but in some situations, it is critical that your dog vacate it’s stomach. If your dog has eaten something poisonous or has managed to eat something that could obstruct it’s digestive tract, you need to ensure that they throw it up right away.
The best thing to do when your dog needs to throw up is to take them to a veterinary clinic — but in some cases, this is simply not an option. To induce vomiting, be sure to feed your dog if they have not eaten recently (this helps them have something to throw up), measure out one milliliter of food grade hydrogen peroxide per pound of your dog (but no more than 45 milliliters), and be prepared to administer another dose should they not throw up for more than 20 minutes.
Hydrogen peroxide is used to create air bubbles in a dog’s stomach — causing them to throw up. That said, you should never give your dog more than 45 milliliters. While hydrogen peroxide is an effective tool, it should only be used when veterinary care is not available.
